Restoration of the Five Hundred Arhats: Inheriting Prayers

A project documenting the restoration of the Five Hundred Arhats by restorer Takeshi Nagai.

The statues of the Five Hundred Arhats at Tenonzan Gohyaku Rakanji Temple (Meguro-ku, Tokyo) were carved by the Edo-period sculptor Shoun Genkei. Having miraculously escaped repeated natural and human-made disasters, 305 statues remain preserved together to this day, continuing to serve as objects of faith. Recognized for their immense historical and cultural significance, they are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Tokyo.

Photographer Michiko Chiyoda was deeply moved both by the mastery of the Arhat statues and by the dedication of restorer Takeshi Nagai, who works to preserve these precious figures for future generations, and began photographing his process.

This experience led Chiyoda to believe that presenting the restoration of these statues could spark broader public interest and understanding, thereby contributing to a society that actively preserves its vital historical and cultural heritage for the future.

Through the cooperation of Tenonzan Gohyaku Rakanji Temple, this vision has now materialized as the exhibition "Restoration of the Five Hundred Arhats: Inheriting Prayers"—combining photography, video installation, and lectures—alongside the publication of a photobook.

Upon encountering the Five Hundred Arhats awaiting restoration, I was captivated by their overwhelming presence and beauty. Countless traces of time are etched into the bodies of these Buddhist statues. Why is it that we find such beauty in their worn, scarred, and transformed states? Through photography, I sought to preserve the Five Hundred Arhats and to document the work of restorer Takeshi Nagai, who is dedicated to passing them on to future generations.

Photobook

"The Buddhist statues we see today in temples and museums have actually reached us through numerous restorations over time."

Hearing these words from restorer Takeshi Nagai made me realize that Buddhist statues are passed down through human hands—and, in other words, that without restoration, they would eventually crumble. This brought a deep desire to share the story of Buddhist statue restoration with a wider audience, which culminated in this photobook.

This publication includes commentary on restoration by Takeshi Nagai, an introduction to Gohyaku Rakanji Temple and its Arhat statues by Kenshin Hori (Temple Administrator), and a critical essay on the works by photography critic Osamu Ueno.

Featuring 80 photographs across 100 pages, this volume is presented as a beautifully crafted, elegant publication.
