Resonating with Stone

Since the dawn of the Earth, stones have continuously engraved immense spans of time within themselves. Volcanic eruptions, sedimentation, and compression—the earth’s various metamorphoses—are held within each stone like a microcosm.

Since ancient times, stones have been viewed as special entities mediating between nature and humanity. In Japan, sacred rocks (iwakura) and megaliths were regarded as deities themselves or as dwelling places for the divine (yorishiro). Even in Zen gardens, stones have supported human spiritual inquiry as symbols of the universe and nature.

When we gaze at a stone and contemplate the vast eons of time, even a small stone brings us into contact with a profound abyss, bringing a sense of silence.

By immersing oneself in the time of this "other"—the stone—the boundaries of the self begin to blur, and one’s inner world quietly settles into tranquility.

Placing oneself in this quietude brings the realization that the passions lurking within our minds are deeply connected to the chaos of modern society, driven by desire.

Yet, I believe that if this silence, born from facing the stone, spreads even slightly into our daily lives, it will serve as a definitive step toward bringing peace to the world.
